Both promise the same outcome: a calendar that tells you what to do next. The difference is what happens when your day changes - and your day always changes.
Manual time blocking and auto-scheduling sit at opposite ends of the same spectrum. They promise the same thing - a calendar where every task has a slot - but they get there in completely different ways, and they fail in completely different ways too.
If you've ever tried manual time blocking and quietly given up, this post is for you. The technique probably wasn't the problem. The maintenance was.
What each one is
Manual time blocking is the version most productivity advice describes. You sit down (Sunday evening, the night before, the morning of) and physically drag tasks onto your calendar. You decide that "Q3 report" goes 09:00-11:00 Tuesday and "Review PRs" goes 14:00-15:00 Thursday. Then you protect those blocks and try to do the work when the time comes.
Auto-scheduling flips it. You write down the task and its constraints - duration, deadline, priority, working hours - and a tool decides where to put it. When something changes (a meeting gets added, a task takes longer, a deadline moves), the tool reshuffles automatically.
Same goal. Wildly different cost structure.
The fundamental tradeoff
Both approaches have to solve the same problem: keeping the schedule correct over time. The difference is who pays.

The "Wednesday problem"
Here's the predictable arc of a manual time blocker:
Sunday - You spend 30 minutes blocking out a beautiful week.
Monday morning - A new 1:1 lands at 14:00, displacing the deep work block. You re-shuffle.
Monday afternoon - A task takes twice as long as you estimated. You re-shuffle again.
Tuesday - Your boss reschedules a meeting from Wednesday to Tuesday afternoon. You re-shuffle a third time.
Wednesday - You stop opening the calendar.
This isn't a failure of discipline. It's a structural problem. Manual time blocking is planning that has to be re-done every time reality moves, and reality moves constantly.
The Wednesday problem is the reason most people who try time blocking abandon it within two weeks.
What auto-scheduling actually does
Auto-scheduling treats the calendar as the *output*, not the input. You don't write the calendar - you write a list of tasks, and the calendar is computed.
